Weekly Blog

This coming Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Feb 9-11, Tri-State area residents can witness a sport that few others in the country can. Ski jumping returns to Satre Hill in Salisbury, CT  for Jumpfest 2018.

Some of the best junior jumpers in the East, in the country for that matter, will compete for prizes on Friday night, trophies on Saturday, and on Sunday, they will be jumping their very best to earn a spot on the Junior National Team. This is a big deal for these kids- the next higher goal for them is the Olympics.

Jumpfest is the major fundraiser for the Salisbury Winter Sports Association (SWSA) which supports winter sports, teaches children to ski jump and maintains  20, 30 and 70-meter hills at its beautiful facilities in Salisbury.

Also on Friday night is the Human Dog Sled Race, an event inside of an event during Jumpfest. This fun race, again rarely seen, pits teams of six people, five pulling one on a sled of the team’s design. The race course is the landing area of the ski jump. This event is fun to either watch or compete in. Visit jumpfest.org for details.

In the interests of full disclosure, I am a long-time volunteer and director of SWSA.

Also coming up soon is a six- event series of “Shoots” at the Northwest CT Rod and Gun Club in Canaan, CT. The first will be held February 18th. Everyone is welcome, including youngsters accompanied by adults. You don’t even need your own firearm- they have a “Club 20 gauge” for you to use. Proceeds will help build a new pavilion. Find out more in the Everything Else Calendar”.

Also upcoming, on February 17th is the Bob and Peg Andrulis 16th Annual Sweetheart Run/Walk in Litchfield, CT. If your running spirit has been hampered by winter weather, this might be just the antidote.  The event is a 5 mile run or a 3 mile walk. Go to the “Run/Walk/ Bike Calendar” to learn more.

Coming soon: News about the successes of recent events.

Stay warm!
