Relay For Life of Litchfield High School
The Relay For Life of Litchfield High School will be held Saturday, April 27, 2019 at Litchfield Middle School Softball Field, 6 Plumb Hill Road, Litchfield, CT 06759.
Participants are encouraged to fundraise in advance of the Relay. For information about starting a fundraising page or joining a team visit : http://main.acsevents.org/site/TR?pg=entry&fr_id=91111
The schedule of events is as follows:
5:00 pm Opening Ceremonies
Survivor and Caregiver Lap
After dark- Luminaria Ceremony. During this ceremony we represent everyone touched by cancer with a Luminaria. Each light represents a life—a life taken by cancer, a survivor of cancer, or a support for a person still fighting the disease. It’s a powerful demonstration that gives people the opportunity to grieve but also offers comfort and hope.
9:00 pm- Closing Ceremony
Team members take turns walking around a track or other designated course. A requirement is that each team has a member walking at all times.
Money is raised by teams who solicit donations from individuals and businesses. There are a number of fundraising options some of which continue year round.
The students at Litchfield High School have been especially active – they have been hosting fundraising events for months now. They have raised pledges by such diverse means as selling wristbands and origami creations and putting on sports-related fundraisers. The school boasts 23 fundraising teams so far.
Relay For Life started in 1985 when Dr. Gordon “Gordy” Klatt walked/ran for 24 hours on a track in Tacoma, Washington to raise money and awareness to help the American Cancer Society.
Today teams raise funds at over 3,500 Relay events nationwide.
Proceeds from Relay For Life events “help the American cancer society fund ground-breaking cancer research, crucial patient care services, and prevention and early detection programs.”
