National Trails Day

National Trails Day will be held Saturday, June 1, 2019 throughout the United States.

Note: Also see Connecticut Trails Day

Organized by the American Hiking Society, National Trails Day® is a day of public events aimed at advocacy and trail service. Thousands of hikers, bikers, rowers, horseback riders, trail clubs, federal and local agencies, land trusts, and businesses come together in partnership to advocate for, maintain, and clean up public lands and trails.

To find an event near you visit americanhiking.org. There is an event at the Overmountain Conservation Area, 138 Cattalino Road, Ancramdale, NY 12503.

There is also a trail maintenance event at the Appalachian Trail section, 97 Goose Pond Road, Lee, MA 01238.

People in or near Connecticut will have the largest number of events (over 250) to choose from. Visit ctwoodlands.org.

Jaime Kirchner Memorial 6th Annual Wheels and Heels 5k/10K Road Race

The Jaime Kirchner Memorial 6th Annual Wheels and Heels 5k/10K Road Race will roll and kick off Saturday, June 1,  2019, at  Valley Road and Campville Hill Road, Harwinton, CT 06791.

The event includes a 5K, 10K, a 5K wheelchair race, a 5k untimed walk and  a 1/2 mile Kids Fun Run. The 5k is a flat course, and the 10K course is hilly.

Timing by Greystone Electronics.

Parking along Valley Road.

Entry Fees:

5K  – $20

5K  Walkers  –  $20

10K  – $25

Wheelchairs  – $20

Kids Fun Run  – Free

Race day entry fees increase $5.

Race Day Schedule:

11:30 am- 12:15 pm  Registration for the 5k, 10K and 5K wheelchair races.

12:15 pm  Registration for the Kid’s Run.

12:30 pm   Kid’s Run starts.

1:00 pm  5K and 10K events begin.

Awards and picnic  sponsored by the Harwinton Rod and Gun Club after races.

Plaques awarded to top male and female finishers, and prizes awarded in seven age categories and three wheelchair categories. Finishers will receive bar soap from Ridge Runner soaps.

The race celebrates the life of James “Jaime” Kirchner, who was born in 1968 with Downs Syndrome, competed in the Special Olympics and earned the Spirit of Life award, inspiring many along the way. Jaime passed away in 2000 at the age of 31.

Proceeds from the race will help fund the construction of a ramp for wheelchair-bound fishermen to access Leadmine Brook, a Naugatuck River tributary and to support the Harwinton portion of the Naugatuck River Greenway.

Millbrook Early Childhood Education Center’s 2nd Annual Print Run

The Millbrook Early Childhood Education Center’s 2nd Annual Print Run will be held Saturday, June 1, 2019 at Millbrook Early Childhood Education Center, 30 Maple Ave, Millbrook, NY 12545. This is a rain or shine event with multiple running choices, especially for the youngsters.

100 Yard Dash (preschoolers)    $15,  race day  $25

Obstacle Course  (ages 3 to 5 or 6 to 10)  $15, race day  $25

1 Mile Run/Walk (ages 5-12 must be with adult)  $20,  race day  $40

5K Run/Walk  $20,  race day  $40

Prizes awarded to 1st, 2nd and 3rd places, male and female in all age groups.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the Millbrook Early Childhood Education Center (MECEC), a local non-profit preschool dedicated to supporting all children and families in our community equally.
