They call it “food insecurity”

They call it “food insecurity” these days.

I don’t like that.

It makes it sound less tragic than what it really is: Hunger-  stomach- rumbling, one-meal-a-day hunger. The hunger crisis was already bad enough, but the pandemic has made it worse. Much worse.

Thank God there are organizations to address this plight. The Corner Food Pantry in Lakeville is one of them. It serves people from Pawling, NY to Torrington, CT without turning anyone away.

They are quick to tell you that they are blessed with generous donors who help keep the doors open, but the need grows. The Pantry serves 75 to 100 families (around 400 people) a week, and those ranks have been growing by one or two families every week.

The Little Guild in West Cornwall takes care of our furry population. They are a no-kill facility that rescues, nurtures and finds forever homes for dogs and cats. Like the Corner Pantry, The Little Guild has loyal supporters, but although adoptions are up, donations are down, the pet food pantry is dwindling. The Guild’s biggest fundraiser, the Run and Wag 5K  has turned virtual this year. We’ll see how that goes.

But today (Saturday) several huge-hearted organizations got together to run a food drive for both the Corner Pantry and the Little Guild. The Tri-State Chamber of Commerce, Salisbury Bank & Trust, NW CT Walk to End Alzheimer’s, Lime Rock Park Catering and Salisbury Rotary joined forces to run a Donation Drive at the Lakeville Methodist Church. These are both businesses that give year round to their communities and non-profits that could probably use some help themselves. But today their efforts went to help others. And help they did. Tina Hogan from the Alzheimer’s Association told me the Drive was a “Great Success”.

Thank you all for what you do!

The Murphy Open Cancelled, but Virtual

The Murphy Open, which was scheduled for June 8th, has been canceled this year. There were high expectations for the 25th Anniversary edition- lots of new and exciting features to go along with the Tournament’s new location at The Links at Union Vale in LaGrange, NY.

But organizers offer a way for golfers to still get together, a sort of virtual event, and most importantly, raise some much-needed funds for a very worthy cause- the Jane Lloyd Fund.

Here is the plan from Tournament Chairman Jean Saliter on behalf of the Tri-State Chamber of Commerce.

“Play A Round For Murph!”

“We ask that your foursome take the originally slated tournament time, on either Monday June 8 or Tuesday June 9 (or between now and then) to “Play A Round For Murph!”

Please pull together your FEARLESS foursome at any golf course, play 9 or 18 in Murph’s honor, and send a few pics our way! We will be playing and ‘cheersing’ and photographing and posting from all over the Tri-State Region, SHARE WITH US!

https://www.facebook.com/TriStateChamberOfCommerce/

When your round is done, please pass the hat for the Jane Lloyd Fund.

Together we will make a difference helping JLF “Helping Cancer Patients Day to Day”.
For the foursome donating the MOST, four swag bags from LAST year: woohoo! DIG DEEP!

Let us know where you are, and we can collect – OR – send donation checks via mail to

The Jane Lloyd Fund
800 N Main St
Sheffield, MA 01257
To make an online donation, please do so here: https://www.thejanelloydfund.org/jane-lloyd-fund

Thank you all for your time, your effort and your love. “The 25th Annual Murphy Open  – Take Two” in 2021 will be GREAT! Promise!

Feel free to email back with suggestions, we look forward to hearing from you!

If you wish to play the Links at Unionvale, here is the number to call 845.223.1002

See you all out and about…FORE!!!”

Dammit We Can Drive!

We will always find ways to express ourselves, no matter how onerous the  restraints. We can’t get together to celebrate a birthday or play a game, we can’t gather to mourn a loss, we can’t stand within two arm lengths of each other. Fine.

But dammit we can get in our cars and drive!

Around 40 cars worth of parade wound their way past fire houses and ambulance garages and health care facilities today to celebrate National Superheroes Day and to honor our first responders and health care heroes. Well-wishers held signs and waved from their vehicles, and at each facility along the route the heroes waved back.

Ten or 20 years from now when we look back on the Pandemic of 2020, one of the defining images of that time will be of people in their cars holding signs and paper hearts out of their windows, waving and calling out – not touching or hugging but still showing the love.

Thanks to the Tri-State Chamber of Commerce and Lime Rock Park and all of the big-hearted people who put on this moving display. And of course thanks to the heroes.
